Hold out your hand Hold it in until we get home There’s someone listening with one eye on home With one eye opened Do you remember Passing out in full view dirt broke Back then we weren’t to know Instantly fading photo And it is not ending And I didn’t make myself clear It’s easy to disappear When you are here, when you are here You ate like a sparrow But I fell for you whole You pounced like a reptile And there’s someone listening more than you know
2.
This could go on for another thirty years And so the drizzle tries to make the window try to disappear The sound of splintering and prising wood is drawing near Another day, another ailment is near A thud around the gut is all that I can hear Friends are shaking off the partying veneer And death is counting on an unsuspecting volunteer But not this fool, I think about it being way too near Another day, another ailment is in the clear A thud around the gut is all that I can hear I don’t mind a little clutter ‘tween the ears
3.
The boats at night, the masts won’t rest Their slapping sound, feet out of step The party lights are in distress And water laps up to the chest The pavement’s charged with your steps…regardless The suitcase choking on your sleeves Their caught up in the zipper’s teeth The channels do not speak to me, a gameshow dream A wooden crag, you catch your dress The hinges groan, the gate’s a mess We’re rotting like a golden fish You don’t think twice, one’s still a stretch The point of this beyond the rest? A summer haze, I flick the switch The heart’s ablaze, rebounding this How many wires are shorting this one caress…

On The Rails 02:29
Pull a stitch, watch it trail All down the stairs and under the veil Off the rail Pasture is green, til’ the wind hits your sails Strumming on nylon, a rose in your teeth This is now old Lift up your head and let down your tyres On heat, on cold All the notches on your sleeve Nurse the shallow air you breathe Bite in the air Feet on cold tyres The long path to you held birds in its spires On the rails Arm in a sling, a fridge full of fires, This is now old Teeth are aglow, neck shows the wires Off the rails
5.
A globe moon, on a paved drive And a car full of sighs Things got heavy, way too soon Now we’re pinned down, surprised We are treading shallows, to keep this alive Leave the meter running, but never arrive The mind is racing how to press rewind A light goes out in those eyes Same old sun, different skies We fight well for our size Hair welts split your mind But it’s low on supplies And if we’re seen together It’s sunburnt skies Swallow every last pill The walls will rise Fingers wrestle for the parking light You licked the paint off my eyes
6.
It kept us up all night The noise from the static, it ain’t right Held up to the light Do the sums on talking tough, then rewind And this town made us fight It’s down to false sight There is grit in the shifting eyes Pretending everything’s alright We both stopped mid-stride Well the door was flung open, ex-bride Like some old bar fight Where the music stopped dead, then grounded flight And for the final time I held a hand to bite You hold out with your one good hand Two fools too slow to understand The last time our feet are on cold sand Rotting from the inside was unplanned
7.
Bite my nails Down to my hands Wander through my plans Who I think of, who I’ve failed, Who I want here now, Who I might let in, I want you around Who willed my arm lightly away Don’t remind me who I am Don’t remind me when Floor is frozen beneath my feet Pull my arm away Feel my nails Pull my arms
8.
There are some things to keep hidden Some old secret, I cut my teeth on Peel my breath back Let go of my arm Too much of a common man Dive motel, flashing neon Car’s pulled out I broke my sleep on Money’s scarce And you dream too much Sometime when she talks I get so far away And to my defence I am, I guess Too much of a common man Peel my mind off Manage my head Is that Bon Scott in your head He wouldn’t have said that Shouldn’t have opened my mail, Messed with my head
9.
There’s so much time apart Between the bridge and the cast iron heart The air in the Mountains made you short of breath And you came apart We just had to laugh A wall to fall against You cut the ribbon and jumped the fence Those fields bleed to the east But they’re passing the lonely test You ripped up your Sunday best Your lips swell with the dust Rains pool at your feet and mirror us Crossing rings out for the XPT You yell into the gust This town isn’t big enough

about

Mist on the Plains was recorded in the Ice Chest in Katoomba and mixed in Smith's Lake.
In my studio, I have an old DVD of Paris, Texas. It has an image of Harry Dean Stanton on the cover in his suit and tie. He’s wearing a moisture-stained, tarnished red cap with the desert looming large in the background. I would look at Harry (Travis), he would be looking past me…and so some lyrics tumbled out
We often go camping west of the Blue Mountains. It’s where I grew up, and this area became the setting for the songs. Faults are filtered through the terrain. Mist on the Plains.

Having played in a number of different bands - El Mopa, The Woods Themselves, Browning, Via Tania - he has released six albums under the Kid Cornered/Ice Chest Orchestra moniker.
